Educator & Mentor
As a Clinical Instructor in the Division of Family Medicine at the University of British Columbia, I am deeply committed to the education and mentorship of the next generation of family physicians. My role involves a significant focus on supporting international medical graduate residents as they transition into the UBC Family Medicine program.
Orientation and Support for International Graduates
I play a pivotal role in orienting international medical graduates to the Canadian healthcare system and the specific challenges and opportunities they will face in British Columbia. My guidance helps these residents adjust not only to a new medical system but also to a new cultural environment, setting them on a path to success from the start of their training.
Guest Lecturing
Beyond my mentoring responsibilities, I contribute to the broader educational mission of UBC as a guest lecturer. In this capacity, I share my extensive knowledge and experience in family medicine, pharmacy, and holistic patient care, enriching the curriculum and providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the diverse aspects of medical practice.
Future Plans in Medical Education
Looking ahead, I am eager to expand my role as an educator by taking on medical residents in my clinic. This will allow me to offer hands-on training in a real-world setting, where residents can learn directly through clinical practice under my guidance. This initiative is aimed at fostering practical skills and instilling a patient-centered approach to care, which is fundamental to family medicine.
Commitment to Medical Excellence
Through these roles, I strive to uphold the highest standards of medical education and to ensure that all residents and students under my tutelage are well-prepared to meet the needs of their patients with professionalism and empathy. My ongoing commitment to medical education is driven by a belief in the transformative power of well-trained, compassionate healthcare professionals.
Committed to Community
Family Physician: As a family physician, I dedicate myself to providing comprehensive, patient-centered care, focusing on preventive health, chronic disease management, and holistic well-being. My practice is grounded in building lasting relationships with my patients and their families, ensuring they receive personalized care tailored to their unique health needs.
BC Family Doctors: Representing the first five years of practice, I actively contribute to BC Family Doctors, voicing the concerns and perspectives of early-career physicians. I am currently running for the role of District 1 Victoria representative to further advocate for the interests of family physicians in our community and enhance healthcare delivery.
Victoria Divisions of Family Practice, Primary Care Network: In my role as a PCN leader, I work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to integrate and optimize health services across Victoria. My leadership aims to foster a unified approach to care, enhancing access and efficiency within the primary care network.
FNHA Subject Matter Expert on Patient Complexity: Born out of an award winning scholar project entitled “All My Relations: Critique of Western Patient Complexity Models for Funding Primary Care” that was presented to the CFPC at FMF in 2021, I became a subject matter expert for the First Nations Health Authority, alongside my colleague Dr. Kate Elliott. We developed a model for redefining patient complexity and to capture the patient and community need, incorporating an Indigenous lens and a focus on the social determinants of health, access, trauma, spirituality, mental health, and more. Our model was piloted at the Williams Lake First Nations Primary Care Centre as part of the First Nations-led Primary Health Care Initiative.
UBC Clinical Instructor: At the University of British Columbia, I serve as a Clinical Instructor, guiding and mentoring medical students and residents in family medicine. I have a particular interest in supporting our International Medical Graduates (IMGs) as they enter and navigate our health care system to support their success in British Columbia. My teaching emphasizes evidence-based practice and compassionate care, preparing the next generation of physicians to meet the challenges of modern healthcare.
Doctors of BC: I am actively involved in several committees within Doctors of BC, including the Clinical Advisory Group and the gastroenterology eReferral subworking group, which support the Province’s Digital Referrals and Orders (DRO) strategy due to launch this year. I am also involved in other initiatives aimed at improving healthcare technology and policy. These roles enable me to influence the direction of healthcare innovations and policy developments across the province.
